Guest Post from Trumpia: 5 Reasons You Need to Embrace Mobile Marketing
By Sophorn Chhay, Inbound marketing Specialist at Trumpia
As any marketer knows, you need to change and adapt to stay competitive. If mobile is not a significant part of your marketing strategy by now, you may be at risk of falling behind. Here are a few reasons to embrace mobile now:
1. People spend more time on mobile than desktop.
Mobile isn’t just catching up with desktop. It’s soared past it. According to Mary Meeker’s ‘State of mobile marketing’ report, people now spend 51% of their time online on mobile, versus 42% desktop. The transition to digital marketing means that marketers have learned to cater to consumer habits and approach prospects where they spend their time. And, as that place increasingly becomes the mobile realm, marketers need to keep up.
2. Mobile is essential for local brick and mortar businesses.
When people are out and about, they have their mobile phones with them. And, they use their phone to do research on purchases while they’re on the go. Getting in touch through apps, SMS coupons and other methods can increase your chances of getting them to step through your door. You can create an app that allows you to send a message when a customer is near or give them codes to have discounts sent to them via SMS when they plan to shop.
3. Mobile could be the key to connecting with Millennials.
Millennials are becoming the largest cohort in the American workplace. They’re a larger market than Gen X. And, they’re more likely to be smart phone owners than other demographics, with 85% of people between 18 and 29 owning a smart phone. Marketers have found this group a tough nut to crack, but being highly visible on their device of choice can be a big help.
4. You have time to get the jump on your competitors.
Even though mobile media usage is way up, mobile ad spending is still lagging a bit behind. While mobile accounts for 24% of time spent viewing media, it only accounts for 8% of advertising spending. If your competitors are doing the work to show up in mobile search, make their sites mobile friendly and reach out to your customers with SMS and mobile apps, they could easily squeeze you out of the market. But, if you get there first, you can stake your claim and win more of your prospects’ attention. But, the time to jump is now. Researchers at eMarketer say that mobile ad spending will make up 72.2% of digital ad spending by 2019.
5. You can build a habit.
Your cost to keep a customer you already have is far lower than the cost of acquiring a new one. By creating a branded app, you can encourage your current customers to do business with you more often. According to Google’s research, fully one-quarter of mobile research on a purchase starts with a branded app. Incorporate a loyalty program, SMS discounts and other perks and you can win customers’ business again and again.
The move to mobile will require that you change a lot about the way that you market. People on their phones are more likely to watch a video than read a long article. They’re more likely to use local search. But, by making mobile central to your strategy, you can meet these challenges and continue to thrive.
